AmigaOS 4.1 Classic Promo video (unofficial)

Hi everyone and Happy New Year! Β I made a video some time ago about AmigaOS 4.1 Classic to act as a little “teaser” and I wanted to show it here. Β It’s not an “official” video, just something put together by me, but in any case I hope you enjoy it!

Again I would like to point out it shows some beta features that may not be in the final version (such as the total memory display in the Workbench Title bar that I am using for debugging/paging tests).

As for the release date, that is always subject to change as we are in the thick of final development now.

I will have further blog entries in the coming weeks as we get closer to the release date of AmigaOS 4.1 Classic.

Here’s the Youtube link to the video:

  1. Good to go! Its nice to see that OS 4.1 can work even of this lowest end hardware specs (603/604 120Mhz + and at least 128MB RAM). However, we`ll see how much upgrade Classic users will have to do to have so much RAM and Radeon card. Hope not too much.

While I like the endavour, I am more eager to hear about overall 4.1.3 update announcement (about same time Feb 2010, or afterwards?) and RadeonHD drivers for all OS 4.x users, PCI, AGP and PCI-E.

  2. Looks very promising! Nice video, looking forward to this release. πŸ™‚

  3. Love it! Absolutely great, can’t wait to finally use Zorram and Radeon in my Classic! Everything is lying around here and waiting for the OS to be finished! πŸ™‚ Thanks Hyperion and Amigakit.com !!!!

  4. I like this and the other 0S4.1 Classic video you’ve done, but they only show an A4000 in use.

Is there a video with it being used on an A1200 PPC setup as well?

Any news on what hardware will be supported with OS4.1 for the Classic Amiga, both the A4000 and A1200, and if there are any differences in support for one machine or the other?

I’m of course specifically interested in more support for the Mediator boards, is there any?

After all, February 2011 is only a few weeks away, if that ends up being the release date. Yet still no definite confirmed information about newly supported features, or any newly supported hardware.

Neil, I don’t have an A1200 setup so I can’t make a video of that. It’s possible another tester will make an A1200 video but that will be up to them.

We are trying to make the same hardware supported between A1200 and A4000, but obviously there will be some differences. For example the ZorRAM card is Zorro 3 only which cannot work on an A1200.

Mediator support has been updated, some bugs in the code fixed, and some additional cards will be supported such as the Radeon 9250, some PCI SATA cards, and perhaps a few others (again, we are still working out the details on that, and I don’t want to say something and then have you disappointed, so it’s better not to say until we are 100% sure).

Februrary 2011 is an internal target, but the ship date is “When it’s done”, not necessarily February. Every day we are getting closer, though, and I can assure you that much work is going on in the background.

As I stated before once things firm up we will make more information available further than what already has been released.

  6. Looks very good. Can’t wait to try it out on my A4000… but as CSPPC is limited to 128MB memory it would be nice to now what options we have to get more.

Is the plan to support ZorRAM only or will all Zorro3 memory cards work (ie FastLane and DKB) ?
How about the memory on a gfx-card used in the Mediator, will it be possible to use that as FastMen like you can in OS3.9? (perhaps that’s up to Elbox to support?)

We have tried to be smart about the Zorro 3 memory and add “generic” support. So in theory all Z3 memory expansion cards should work. Unfortunately they would need to be tested and so far only the ZorRAM has been tested.

Currently using gfx memory as additional ram isn’t a feature – that is why we wrote Zorro 3 memory support.

Just one more reply, even with a 256MB ZorRAM you will still want a disk-based swap partition in case the ZorRAM fills up. There will be lots of info on this in a FAQ that will come out when AmigaOS 4.1 for Classic ships. You could also have multiple ZorRAM’s (as long as you stay with in the Amiga’s address space limitations).

Probably what most people will use is (A3/4000 users anyway) a ZorRAM and hard disk based swap partition or some combination of one or the other or both.

  9. Thanks for the reply.
Sadly my A4000 only has a soldered Buster rev9.. so no ZorRAM for me..

You will be OK with a disk pager then. If you can use the cyberstorm ppc scsi controller that is the next best option for a paging device, if not the best, since the SCSI uses DMA.
